What is Carignan?
Old Vine Carignan from “1900” Block of Jessie’s Grove Vineyard
Tasting notes on our 2021 Old Vine Carignane from Jessie’s Grove Vineyard in the Mokelumne River AVA in Lodi
Carignan (care-in-yawn) is a red wine grape varietal native to the Aragon region of Spain. Carignan thrives in the warm, dry climate of the Mediterranean coast and is typically blended into wines from Catalonia, Priorat and Languedoc Roussillon.
Carignan as a single varietal wine is experiencing a renaissance as more producers throughout the world begin to leverage old vine vineyards to craft quality wines that are deliciously rich, fruity and savory.
In California and specifically in the Lodi area, old vine Carignan thrives in the hot dry weather. Some of the oldest vineyards, many planted over 100 years ago are in Lodi, including from Jessie’s Grove Vineyard where the “1900” Block Carignan clocks in at 128 years old.
